Background

Hidden Trails have worked with local communities in 2019 to develop a series of treks that are exclusively offered to trekkers who are able to base themselves out of this amazing facility. Treks such as “In Search of Seetha”, “Waterfall - Ellamulla Gardens Loop” and the “Eastlands Cultural Trek” have rarely been traversed by tourists and local guides will provide you with rare insights into their communities.

The Tea & Experience Factory is an ideal location to base yourself for trekkers of all abilities explore the local surroundings. Hidden Trails offers several Sri Lankan treks which were explored, mapped, named and rated by our Sri Lanka born International Guide – Stewart Kreltszheim (Bugher) and his team of local guides – Mohan (Sinhalese) and Moorthy (Tamil) allowing a multi-cultural insight into some amazing local communities. All these Sri Lankan treks can be completed in a day which means that trekkers can enjoy the principle intention of this experiential boutique hotel which is to provide its visitors with an immersive, artisan journey from tea plucking to packing while creating a luxurious space for trekking with rest and relaxation. The locals from the estate have been re-employed at the tea factory to help them sustain their way of life.

Come, discover the region, meet the locals and learn the craft of making your own Hidden Trails Treks include:

Eastland Cultural Trek Rating (3 to 4 chillies): Trek through a variety of landscapes (villages, tea plantations, vegetable gardens) to the Eastland Division Muster Shed and then on to  “World’s End” (4 + hours)

Waterfall - Ellamulla Gardens Loop (2 to 3 chillies depending on conditions): The trek begins as a gentle walk through the tea fields along well-made tracks and rocky roads however after about 90 mins it leaves the roads and you begin to trek along tracks used by only the locals.  There are some technically challenging components and at a steady pace should take the average trekker 4 hours.

In Search of Seetha (2 to 3 chillies depending on conditions): Travel to Mooloya Estate by car for approximately 2 hours and then trek to “ a mattress of flowers” on top of a beautiful mountain range and then return to the Tea & Experience Factory mid-afternoon.

Kabagaragla Waterfall (1 chilli) – a gentle one hour (each way) stroll along well-made tracks and plantation roads.
